ABC has confirmed Scandal‘s upcoming seventh season will be the show’s last. The announcement was made by ABC president Channing Dungey during a conference call with reporters.

The ABC drama’s seventh and final season will consist of 18 episodes. That represents a two-episode increase over Season 6, which was scaled back from 22 to 16 episodes due to leading lady Kerry Washington’s pregnancy.

Exec Producer Shonda Rhimes was quoted as stating:

‘’We are going all out. Leaving nothing on the table. Creating this world in celebration. We are going to handle the end the way we like to handle the important things in our Scandal family: all together, white hats on, gladiators running full speed over a cliff.”

After putting in six seasons as a Scandal recurring player, George Newbern is being promoted to a full-fledged series regular for the ABC’s drama’s upcoming seventh and final season.

Since his introduction, Charlie has (mostly) shed his shady ways, taking a job at OPA and planning a future with Quinn, his blushing bride-to-be — that is, assuming her lingering feelings for Huck don’t put a damper on the big day.

Olivia being named Mellie’s chief of staff doesn’t change Rowan’s agenda; who never wanted to spend any time at the White House.

As for the final Season, fans are perhaps hoping there’s still love between Fitz and Olivia. Actor Tony Goldwyn said of his character Fitz:

“The relationship is a delicate balancing act, one that becomes more difficult as the seasons progress. Fitz is in love with Olivia, and he always will be. He’s learned how to manage that. He’s grateful that she’s still in his orbit and that he can have a business relationship with her. In some sense, they have a very strong connection, even though it’s very painful for them to be together. They’re honest with each other, they have a sort of short-hand communication. But for Fitz, he’s had to make his peace with the fact that Olivia does not want him. It’s just one of those things in life that causes him grief — but he’s had a lot of that over the years, so he’s no stranger to it.”

Meanwhile Olivia’s other love interest, Jake Ballard is trapped in a tragic marriage. Actor Scott Foley says of his character ‘Jake’ that he believes a romantic reunion with Olivia is still possible… at some point.

“Jake’s in a really tough spot. He’s living in this home with a woman he doesn’t love-he probably doesn’t even like her, to be honest-but he understands her predicament, as anyone would. If you’re in a relationship with someone, and you don’t want to be there, but they do, it’s really difficult. I think he feels awful about it. But at the same time, she’s a pawn in a much bigger chess game.”

The final Season’s return has been confirmed but the date has yet to be announced.
